# Bible reading & study glossary

A simple guide to the terms you’ll encounter while reading the Bible and organizing your favorite passages.

## Reading the Bible

Book

One of the individual works that make up the Bible, such as Genesis, Psalms or John.

Chapter

A numbered division within a book of the Bible.

Verse

A numbered portion of a chapter, used to locate and refer to a specific part of the text.

Passage

A section of Scripture. In this app, a saved passage is one verse or a range of verses within a chapter.

Reference

The address of a passage: book, chapter and verse. John 3:16 means the book of John, chapter 3, verse 16.

Verse range

Consecutive verses read or saved together. Psalm 23:1–3 includes verses 1, 2 and 3.

Translation

A rendering of the biblical text into a language. Different translations may express the same passage with different wording.

WEB

The abbreviation for World English Bible, an English Bible translation available in the reader.

Reina-Valera 1909

A Spanish Bible translation available in the reader, identified by the code SpaRV.

Old Testament

The first major section of the Christian Bible, containing books of law, history, poetry, wisdom and prophecy.

New Testament

The section of the Christian Bible containing the Gospels, Acts, letters and Revelation.

Gospels

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John: the four New Testament accounts of the life, teaching, death and resurrection of Jesus.

Context

The surrounding verses, the book as a whole and its historical setting, which help you understand a passage.

## Your study library

Library

Your personal space for saved passages, highlights and study notes.

Highlight

A color applied to a passage to make it easier to recognize when you return to it.

Note

Your own written reflection, question or observation about a passage.

Tag

A topic or label you attach to a saved passage, such as hope or prayer, to help find related passages.

Collection

A group of saved passages gathered for a study, reflection, sermon or another purpose.

Reading plan

A sequence of passages you can read and mark complete at your own pace.

Daily verse

The featured homepage passage. It changes each day at midnight UTC, with calendar-based selections for special dates.
